Do you have 3 Tab Shingles in your roof?
This is a sign that you may need to change your shingles. Do you want to know why?
Back in the day 3 tab shingles were the most popular option for asphalt shingles. The main reason being that they are less expensive than architectural shingles even tough they are both made of asphalt. Here are a few differences between the two:
The main difference is the amount of material used for fabrication. Architectural shingles are heavier and the base mat on a architectural shingle is thicker than the one on a 3 tab shingle. Architectural shingles also have a stronger adhesive and more granules on their top surface.
Wind Ratings
3 tab shingles are rated for winds of up to approximately 95 kilometers per hour. Due to its composition the space between tabs does not allow for a solid resistance against strong winds. That is why we see pieces of shingles flying off during strong winds.
Architectural shingles, depending on the manufacturer, are typically rated for winds of 120 to 200 kilometers per hour.
Durability
The durability of shingles depends widely on the weather conditions of where they are installed. In areas of extreme weather, such as Alberta, 3 tab shingles provide an optimal protection for approximately 7-11 years. They can last up to 15 years however when they have been on this long we often find mold or rotting wood during its replacement. Architectural shingles typically have a lifespan of 18-25 years. However, they may last up to 30 years under optimal conditions.
No underlayment
If your roof still has 3 tab shingles, we can assure you that you do not have an underlayment on your roof. Back in the day, installers did not use underlayment. Felt paper was used instead as an ice and water shield. Felt is an asphalt saturated paper that increases the water resistance of your roof from wind driven rains or blow offs. Nail holes from shingles can pose a problem with felt paper, as any holes become vulnerable to seepage.
With this information you are able to determine yourself if you need to have your shingles replaced. An in person inspection is important as well as taking into consideration the year your shingles you have were installed.
